Gypsum

Material We Can’t Live Without

We are increasingly aware of how much we miss nature, where we feel healthy and fulfilled. However, it’s not necessary to live or work in the forest to ensure a better quality of life and a healthy environment. Ecological considerations play a significant role in modern construction. Alongside energy optimization, the construction-biological qualities of materials are of great importance for creating a healthy and comfortable living environment.

Knauf Cleaneo® Akustik is an innovative product manufactured at the Knauf Maritsa plant (Galabovo Municipality). The introduction of Knauf Cleaneo® Akustik—gypsum boards with a special additive made from the mineral zeolite—into construction practice provides a comprehensive solution to the issues of polluted air and poor acoustics in indoor spaces.

Gypsum – As Natural as Human Skin

Did you know?

Gypsum was discovered as early as the 3rd–4th century BC by the ancient Egyptians and was later popularized in Europe primarily by the Romans. Gypsum is an impeccable material from the perspective of both its compatibility with the human body and building biology. It shares the same pH level as human skin, is odorless, and completely harmless. As a vapour-permeable material, it allows the skin to breathe, a property that is equally valued in constructing walls and ceilings.

Today, the growing use of gypsum in construction and renovation projects for residential, commercial, public, and office buildings can be attributed to the unique properties of gypsum-based building materials. In the construction industry, gypsum comes in various forms and can be applied at every stage of construction. One of the most popular gypsum-based building products is a gypsum board, designed for drywall construction systems. Gypsum boards used in residential construction ensure a healthy living environment and create a sense of coziness and comfort. Gypsum regulates indoor humidity due to its many tiny pores, which absorb moisture from the air when it’s excessive and release it when the air is dry.

You might be surprised to learn that an average person consumes about six tons of gypsum over their lifetime. Gypsum is an ingredient in many food products:

  • Calcium sulfate is a natural component of drinking water.
  • It is used as an additive to soften drinking water.
  • It conditions beer during brewing.
  • It acts as a baking aid in bread production.
  • It serves as a thickening agent for marmalade and jam.

Gypsum is approved as a food additive (E 516). The biological calcium content in gypsum is comparable to that of milk!
